Do we naturally crave plant-based foods in the summer months?

As summer gets closer and the temperature starts to rise, our bellies seem to crave more plant-based foods. It’s definitely the case with the Boosh Food™ team, as we’re already a pretty passionate crew about our 100% plant-based, non-GMO and gluten-free Boosh meals.

 We wondered if others also find it easier to fill their plates with plant-based foods, crunchy green snacks and sweet fruits when summer’s here.  

Sitting down with our friend, Monique Zizzy, a North Vancouver, BC-based nutritionist and consultant, we asked her why it’s easier to eat a plant-based diet in the warmer months.

As it happens, we have a lot more in common with our bear friends, as we, too, come out of a hibernation of sorts. And our dietary cravings reflect this.

Monique Zizzy says, “It makes good sense that our cravings are seasonal. Our bodies come out of hibernation from the winter months. During that time, our bodies adjust to the cold, and digestion even slows down.”

By the time summer rolls around, we no longer need heavy foods after resting and maybe even a gaining few pounds over winter to help keep our bodies warm.

 “With the sunlight, longer days and the heat, our bodies process foods much quicker. So, we naturally go through a detox and then into a growth mode. Plant-based foods, like mustard greens, keep our liver happy and help us nutrition-wise with these seasonal changes.”

 “We also naturally crave the food that’s growing. We’re eating what’s around us and in season instead of eating all season. In the summer, we have a local abundance of herbs, greens, stone fruit, you name it, and our bodies crave these plant-based foods.”

“Take a look at asparagus. Our bodies can hunger for asparagus when it’s ripe (typically in spring). So, it’s easy to eat plant-based foods when they are in season and abundant. And it’s just us listening to our bodies and eating what it needs at that time.”
