Simple Homemade Plant-based Bowl

Routinely buying plant-based bowls from outside can be expensive, especially if you have them for lunch every day. It’s easier to master the recipe so that you can make it at home, add the ingredients of your choice, and meal prep multiple bowls for your daily lunch.

Starting With Your Base

The base of the bowl is going to be your carb for the meal. They are the energy powerhouse of the meal and keep you going throughout the day. It's best to include legumes or starch. Some choices are:

  • Rice

  • Sweet potato

  • Quinoa

  • Beans

  • Lentils

  • Savoury oats

  • Buckwheat

  • Barley

  • Roasted potatoes

PICK YOUR PROTEIN

Protein is an excellent additive to any bowl because they fill you up, which is great if you eat your bowls at lunchtime. They will keep you fuller for longer, so you won't need to munch on any snacks. Some great protein examples are:

  • Tofu: you can bake it or roast it depending on the texture that you want to add to your bowl

  • Beans

  • Lentils

  • Quinoa

  • Homemade veggie burgers

  • Beyond Meat chicken strips

  • Hemp seeds

VEGGIES

The heart of the bowl is truly the veggies that you add. You can use any veggies that you have in your fridge. You can put them in raw, or for veggies like cauliflower, broccoli, and even carrots, you can roast them to add a nice flavour to your bowl.

Adding a Healthy Fat

Just like protein and carbs, fats allow you to stay full, and fats slow the digestion of food so that you will stay fuller for longer. Some delicious fats are:

  • Olive oil

  • Avocado

  • Hemp seeds

  • Cashew cheese

  • Tahini

  • Any nut or seed butter-based dressings

DRESSING OR SAUCE

A protein-based bowl is nothing without a delicious sauce to add flavour. You can make your own or buy a store-bought dressing. Some delicious examples are:

  • Tahini

  • Balsamic vinaigrette

  • Miso sesame dressing

FINAL ADDITIVES

Once all the ingredients have been added to your bowl, you can add extra toppings for an elevated texture. From crushed nuts, seeds, to topping it off with some fresh herbs. All of these are going to give a unique flavour to your bowl.
